the window

This is a story I read long ago. Just wanted to share it with you guys.

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour a day to drain the fluids from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. And every afternoon when the  man in the bed next to the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed would live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and colour of the outside world. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake, the man had said. Ducks and swans played on the water while  children sailed their model boats. Lovers walked arm in arm amid flowers of every colour of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by.  Although the other man could not hear the band, he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words. Unexpectedly, an alien thought entered his head: Why should he have all the pleasure of seeing everything while I never get to see  anything? It didn't seem fair. As the thought fermented, the man felt ashamed at first. But as the days passed and he missed seeing more sights, his envy eroded into resentment and soon turned him sour. He began to brood and found himself unable to sleep. He should be by that window - and that thought now controlled his life.

Late one night, as he lay staring at the ceiling, the man by the window  began to cough. He was choking on the fluid in his lungs. The other man watched in the dimly lit room as the struggling man by the window groped for the button to call for help. Listening from across the room, he never moved, never pushed his own button which would have brought the nurse running. In less than five minutes, the coughing and choking  stopped, along with the sound of breathing. Now, there was only silence--deathly silence.

The following morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths. When she found the lifeless body of the man by the window, she was saddened and called the hospital attendant to take it away--no  words, no fuss. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the man asked if he  could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.
Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it all himself. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a brick wall.

Moral of the story:

The pursuit of happiness is a matter of choice...it is a positive attitude we consciously choose to express. It is not a gift that gets delivered to our doorstep each morning, nor does it come through the window. And I am certain that our circumstances are just a small part of what makes us joyful. If we wait for them to get just right, we will never find lasting joy.

The pursuit of happiness is an inward journey. Our minds are like  programs, awaiting the code that will determine behaviours; like bank vaults awaiting our deposits. If we regularly deposit positive, encouraging, and uplifting thoughts, if we continue to bite our lips just before we begin to grumble and complain, if we shoot down that seemingly harmless negative thought as it germinates, we will find that there is much to rejoice about.

blood ties...

When two people love each other wholeheartedly, a little clash between them may possibly blow up more than necessary. E.g. One person feels neglected and so doubts and questions the other. The other is hurt by this and lashes out. And so ensues an unnecessary fight! Almost immediately they regret what they had each said but both are too stubborn to apologize or perhaps don't know how to. It’s awkward. It’s unwanted.

But because of the love it will eventually fizzle out. This happens mostly with family. Since we're bound to each other in unbreakable ways, it’s easier to forgive and forget and move on, perhaps even without an apology.

Why don't we treat everyone like family? Not take little things to heart. And even if you have little quibble find comfort in the fact that you'll sooner or later move past it and that there's no use in holding grudges.

Of course the best of all is to avoid arguing in the first place. Mother Teresa once said:
“We are allowed to make mistakes. But the actions we take while in a rage will haunt us forever. Pause and ponder. Think before you act. Be patient. Forgive and forget. Love one and all.”

Be the bigger person and say sorry even if you weren’t in the wrong. Life is so much more exhilarating (and blithe) when everyone’s happy with each other!

Слънце ;)

Sun down, Friday night,
Uptown, city lights,
Here I go, start it out,
I like,
Dressed up, out the door
So damn ready for, one night, maybe more,
I like, I like.

When you cross my way,
I like, I like,
Just you and I touch at first sight.

Hey there pure star lets go way too far, come a little closer
I like,
Heart flips up and down,
Dancing on sleezy ground,
Betcha want to get it on,
I like, I like.

You’ve got me down right electrified,
Don’t stop the rides,
I like, I like,
Just you and I,
Here and now what a night.

Dance all night don’t stop the music,
I like I cant refuse it,

And the world around us wont stop turning tonight,
I like, I like,
I’m losing control right now and I feel its right,
I like, I like,
We’re caught in this moment, I wont let you go,
And the world around us wont stop turning tonight,
I like, I like, I like, I like.

“Poverty may be the mother of crime, but lack of good sense is the father”

Yesterday was not a good day for me. Was feeling really disheartened. The day just got off to a bad start. Martin, the mechanic from next door was robbed Wednesday evening.
They beat him up pretty badly.

Now I’m terrified. We’re probably their next target. God protect us all. I’m so sick of this!!!

Watched the security footage all morning. Saw how cunningly they planned the entire thing. They were in and out in less than 10 minutes. Seems they do have brains but just use it for the wrong things. That makes them stupid. It’s easier to rob people then to earn their own money. It’s repulsive.

And I don’t understand why they had to resort to violence. He was cooperating and gave them whatever they wanted. The pigs. Am so infuriated.

Visited Martin and he says he believes there’s a God up there and they’re going to get what they deserve, “Twenty times they might get lucky, but on twenty-one they’ll be done.”

Can you believe we live in a country where we have to make sure we have cash on hand in case someone robs us? Because God-forbid they hold you up and you have nothing to give them. They’ll kill you for a buck. Barbaric.

Keep safe my loves.

broken connection

"You know how they say no man is an island? Well I think, actually, every man is an island. And relationships are like bridges. One guy builds one-half of the bridge and the other guy, or gal, you know, builds the other half, and they try to meet in the middle. But sometimes, the islands are too far apart, or one person stops building, or one bridge is built too high/low for the other. And it's sad but it happens. That's okay because sometimes, we just have to move on."

heart vs head

A friend asked a question last night: “How do u know you've made the right decision when your mind and heart disagree?”
I remember writing a blog post answering that exact question in January but a search for it produced no results. Had a look this morning and see that I had typed it out but saved it in my drafts. So today’s post will be dedicated to my friend and answering that question.

When it comes to affairs of love, you have to wait for your heart to learn what your head already knows.
They are two separate thinking organs—the heart and brain, and no matter what decisions you make with your head, your heart still seems to lead the way.

“The human heart feels things the eyes cannot see, and knows what the mind cannot understand.” - Robert Valett

“The heart is forever making the head its fool.” - François de la Rochefoucauld

“If your head tells you one thing, and your heart tells you another, before you do anything, you should first decide whether you have a better head or a better heart.” -Marilyn vos Savant

It really depends on the situation. Sometimes you don’t depend on either. You use your intuition. Or go for what you know will make you happy but don’t harm others in the process.
Don’t hesitate because it’s risky—to risk nothing is to risk even more.
Never compromise on your morals and values! As long as you know the limits everything will be fine.

If you’ve been in a similar situation before, learn from your errors/success.

And lastly a second/third opinion also helps. Just make sure the end decision is your own and one that you can stand by whether it was a good choice or a mistake.

Hope this helped!

steel magnolia

Apparently “Steel Magnolia” is an apt description of me. Think it means: strong and independent yet very feminine.
"There was a will of steel beneath the soft magnolia exterior..."
I like it.
It doesn’t have anything to do with the movie but it did inspire someone to send me the following…

Original text by Mary Lynn Hatfield

She is the very essence of strength combined with femininity. She is a woman who enjoys being a woman, and is well aware of the power that comes with it. She is the backbone of her family, in good times and bad; and "family" means so much more than just blood kin to her – it encompasses anyone to whom she is tied by heartstrings.

She takes great pleasure in being there for those she loves, and in filling their needs. She will even put her own needs on the back burner to do this, and never give it a second thought. And it doesn't matter to her if she's filling a need that will earn her recognition and praise or if it's so "behind the scenes" that no one ever even knows who filled it. The only reward she needs is the knowledge that the need was filled. It is she who holds the family together when everyone else is ready to quit.
It is also she who teaches her children the values of love, compassion, courage, strength, spirituality, joy, and even sorrow. She teaches them that it is not a sin to make a mistake; but it is one not to try. She teaches them that it's perfectly normal to have weak moments when you want to quit; but it's not good to give in to the urge to do so. It is she who teaches them that they can be anything they want to be, and have anything they want out of life; the sky's the limit – if they want it badly enough to work really hard for it.

She is also an excellent cook.

While all Steel Magnolias are taught very early on to "accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative", everyone knows their real beauty comes from within.
"Pretty is as pretty does"
The beauty of a Steel Magnolia is one that shines from within her; it's a glow that all the best makeup in the world, most artfully applied, can never begin to duplicate – much less surpass. It's a glow that comes from her genuine love of others, her deep interest in them and how their life is going, her concern for how she might make things better for her world. It comes from her not just looking at your eyes, but into your heart, when she is a part of your world. It comes from knowing that she will be there to laugh with you, as any loved one will; but she will also be there to hold you, cry with you, and roll up her sleeves and help you work your way out of rock bottom when life puts you there. The real secret to a Steel Magnolia's beauty is that it is purely and simply a reflection that comes from how you see her in your heart.

Steel Magnolias have a unique way of speaking –phrases like none you've ever heard anywhere else and, when the situation warrants it, they are also quite capable of cutting a deserving person into ribbons with their words in such a way that that person will not only thank them for it at the time, but not even realize that they've been shredded until much later down the road. It's an ability with which they are all quite fluent, and a power that is used very judiciously; but believe me, you do not want to be a recipient of this particular talent of a Steel Magnolia! And, in this day of equal rights, a Steel Magnolia knows that she has her place in the workplace that is equal to any man's; but she also knows that she is the one with the real power in personal matters. Their gentlemen know this as well; they accept its wisdom and know full well it's worth the price to be the center of a Steel Magnolia's world!

You see, a Steel Magnolia doesn't consider it an insult to have a door opened for her, or to be helped into her coat, or other such gentlemanly things done for her; she knows these things are not done because her gentleman thinks she is incapable of doing them herself – he does them out of respect and his love for her. It is his way of showing he enjoys taking care of her in small ways, as well as large. It is a reciprocation of tenderness between the two.

Steel Magnolias love all the trappings of femininity; they are strictly female females and enjoy being that way.

Thank you for sharing this with me! I know a few "steel magnolias" myself ;)

fuddy-duddy...

I had the most wonderful night on Friday. Thank you to my friends for stubbornly refusing to accept my excuses for not coming out and pitching up at my front door. It’s so great to be in the company of warm and wonderful people, laughing hysterically at their silly stories and comical experiences. It was MUCH needed. Made some good new friends and even had a woman hit on me (very unwelcome and uncomfortable). Haha.

There seems to be drama unfolding all around me. Deaths, accidents, missing persons, heartbreaks, interventions. It’s difficult to stay positive—can’t help but expect the worst from all situations. But I guess if you’ve already made up your mind about something than that’s exactly what you’ll get. So it’s better to be open to things (either way) and perhaps you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Mother has been on about marriage again. So to trouble and tease her I gave her a list of my “requirements.” She sarcastically told me to marry Prince William. That’s her way of saying I’m too fussy and what I want is impossible to get.

Haha. I don’t think “no farm-town boy, not too holy, not rich, not too good-looking, educated, and not sponging off his father, etc” is that hard to find. But I’ll just allow her to believe I’m too picky so that she’ll leave me alone for a while.

to be fat like me

"To Be Fat Like Me” is a movie about a girl who believes that overweight people, like her mom and brother, seem to make excuses about how the world perceives them. She decides to go undercover as a fat girl to prove that weight has nothing to do with popularity and that the fat person's negative attitude is to blame instead. She learns that being fat is not easy and is mocked and teased by the other kids.
She starts off believing that “Fat people use their weight as an excuse” and ends up realising that being fat “is like permission for people to treat you like crap.”

The issue of obesity is a very real problem. However, the problems are not just health-wise, but also a sociological and psychological problem. Just because people look different from you that does not give you the right to judge them by what’s on the outside.

The movie has good intentions but what is up with the ending??? She asks her boyfriend if he would stay with her if she were really to balloon up and he says no. While that may be honest, it's sad... Maybe if they were strangers he would not be attracted to her, but the whole point is that her size would change, not her personality. But he says he likes that she’s skinny and a jock. And she’s happy with his answer and kisses him! Wtf? Seriously?

Favourite quote from the film:
“Fat or skinny, popular or freak, it all comes down to this—the world will tell you who you are until you tell the world.”

I’m sick of people judging others by their appearance! Just because someone is overweight that doesn’t mean they’re a lesser person or that they are bad people for allowing themselves to be that size. It doesn’t mean they should be treated differently or that they don’t deserve/won’t get what a thin person would. They could be the most wonderful, sweetest people inside but they’re not even given a chance. It’s narrow minded, ignorant people who continuously pester fat people into believing that they’re worth less than the non-fat people around them.

And while I am already venting I will just add that Indian people do that a lot! Especially in my family. Makes me sick to my stomach. Superficial freaks! They don’t realise how their words affect a person and what it does to them mentally.
They claim they are just worried about the risks of obesity but that’s bullshit. All their “advice” just makes no problem into a big dilemma. It’s an issue because you made it one. All I have to say to those critical scumbags is that “People can lose the weight. But you’ll probably never stop being shallow.”

natural highs

I read this somewhere and adapted it a little. In no specific order, these are some of the things that make me feel good:
Being in love.
Laughing so hard my face hurts.
A hot shower.
No queues at the supermarket.
Taking a drive on a pretty road.
Hearing my favourite song on the radio.
Lying in bed listening to the rain outside.
A bubble bath.
Giggling.
A good conversation.
Finding money in my coat from last winter.
Running through sprinklers.
Laughing for absolutely no reason at all.
Having someone tell you that you're beautiful.
Accidentally overhearing someone say something nice about you.
Waking up and realising you still have a few hours left to sleep.
Making new friends or spending time with old ones.
Having someone play with my hair.
Sweet dreams.
Making eye contact with a cute stranger.
Holding hands with someone you care about.
Running into an old friend and realising that some things (good or bad) never change.
Watching the expression on someone's face as they open a much-desired present from you.
Knowing that somebody misses you.
Getting a hug from someone you care about deeply.
Having happy thoughts.
Someone rubbing your back.
Walking on the beach.
Watching the sunset/sunrise.
Friends.
Playing with kids.
Someone telling you he/she loves you.
Seeing smiles and hearing laughter from my friends.
Eating my favorite food.
Getting out of bed every morning and being grateful for another beautiful day.

Can you guys think of any others?
Have a wonderful day.

everything has it's season...

I’m sad today. Had one of those intense profound moments that made me rethink everything in my life. You think all’s good and your priorities are in order and then you get a reality check. Dispelling all your unrealistic notions, illuminating what’s truly important. The mood is quite sombre and the topic of the day is: death.

“He who fears death dies every time he thinks of it.”

Death is a certainty. It’s inevitable. So why does it startle us? Why aren’t we all living, prepared for it- not only for our own passing but for those around us too?

We shouldn’t get caught up in this material world and forget our true purpose.

“Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome.”

What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal. Not one car, kingsize bed, pet, child, wife, husband, friend, foe, mountain we climbed, or 90 inch TV we were finally able to afford will make that journey with us.

“The idea of death, the fear of it, haunts the human animal like nothing else; it is a mainspring of human activity - designed largely to avoid the fatality of death, to overcome it by denying in some way that it is the final destiny of man.”

Accepting death is most difficult for those that we leave behind. For a parent to lose a child, for a child to lose a parent, for a friend to lose a friend, is something beyond our control. And what you have to remember is that this world was just a temporary vacation and now they’re all gone home.

“Is death the last sleep? No—it is the last and final awakening.”
“The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception. Every soul shall have the taste of death. "

I was inspired by the following:
'I borrowed a piece of jewellery from a neighbour of mine, and I have worn it and used it for a long time. Then they asked me for it. Should I let them have it back?'
-'Yes.'
'I have had it for a long time.'
-'It is more correct for you to return it to them, since they have lent it to you for such a long time.'
'Then why do you then grieve over what God has lent you and then taken from you, when He has a greater right to it than you?'”

We must accept their death as preordained and unavoidable. Pray for them and don’t let grief consume you. They are lucky they are free of the trifling temptations of this world and have moved onto the next stage of their existence.

“There are three things, which may continue to benefit a person after death: charity given during life which continues to help others, knowledge from which people continue to benefit, and a righteous child who prays for him or her.”

No longer mourn for me when I am dead
Than you shall hear the surly sullen bell
Give warning to the world that I am fled
From this vile world with vilest worms to dwell:
Nay, if you read this line, remember not
The hand that writ it, for I love you so,
That I in your sweet thoughts would be forgot,
If thinking on me then should make you woe.
Oh, if, I say, you look upon this verse,
When I perhaps compounded am with clay,
Do not so much as my poor name rehearse;
But let your love even with my life decay.
Lest the wise world should look into your moan,
And mock you with me after I am gone.

another protest on crime...

So it seems there is yet another strike happening in our CBD. Don’t know for what this time. It’s by members of SATAWU (transport union). We’ve all been warned to avoid the area and fear for our lives. Just another day in sunny Johannesburg. Sigh.

In other news, we’ve been advised to always ask for a cash slip when filling up petrol. (Even if you intend on throwing the slip away)
Because the pump attendants take these unclaimed cash slips from the cash register attendant and sell these same cash slips to taxi drivers. The taxi drivers then add these cash slips to their own and so claim a bigger subsidy amount from government, thereby not feeling the pinch of the fuel increases.
Don’t know how true this is, didn't even know that fuel for taxis is subsidized. The attendant can reprint the slip anyway. Aren’t the licence numbers supposed to be printed on the receipt? If the government accepts any old cash slip as proof of purchase then they are more screwed up than we thought. Sigh.

Latest email: There is a new number plate hijacking trend brewing around. These hijackers will follow you to a parking lot or mall, after parking your vehicle; they remove your number plate and wait for you to drive off. They then follow you and display your number plate at their window as if you had lost it and they want to give it back to you. Shocked that your number plate has fallen off your car, you bring your vehicle to a halt to get it from them. This is all they want you to do and by the time you realized what happened it is too late, your car was hi-jacked or you could have been raped/killed.
Please don’t just stop for anything; a number plate is valueless compared to your life. Think what is happening before you react to it. Criminals are clever and cunning but are ruthless in getting what they want. Sigh.

Thanks to a new signal-jamming tactic being used by thieves, you may be unwittingly leaving your car unlocked, allowing them to help themselves to your valuables seconds after your departure. It is thought that a certain device when activated by a thief, at precisely the same moment a car owner presses the lock button on his remote, interferes with the signal and prevents the car from locking. Since there will be no signs of the car being broke into, you cant claim anything from insurance. They’ll just accuse you of being negligent. Most manufacturers of car and gate remotes use a fixed frequency of 433MHz issued by Icasa, which regulates the South African communications sector. So pay close attention when you use your remote to lock your car.
Also, don’t know how true this is. It’d probably make more sense to believe that this happened when the technology was still in its infancy. But it apparently happened to some car owners last week. Sigh.

Don’t open your door for anyone who says they are there to make a delivery, read your meter, or fix your telephone line. Even if they know your name, your father’s name and your entire life story. They are criminals in disguise, willing you to open and then robbing your home. Trust no one. Always be afraid. Sigh.

According to this widely circulated warning message, criminals are user ether disguised as perfume as a means of debilitating and robbing victims. By handing you a business card or a perfume sample. When you sniff it, you'll pass out. They'll take your wallet, your valuables and heaven knows what else. This one has been going around since 2000 so could be a hoax. Either way you shouldn’t go sniffing something a stranger offers you in the first place. In fact if someone approaches you when you’re alone in a parking lot, scream bloody murder. You may just be overreacting but it’s okay. This is South Africa after all. Sigh.

Never stop if a Metro cop signals you to pull over. Drive to the nearest police station and let them follow you if they must. Chances are they are not genuine cops or they are corrupted ones and they will hijack/rob/rape you. Sigh.

I’ve been warned not to drive with my window open. Someone might mug or hijack me.
I’ve been advised to leave my window open a little gap so if someone attempts to throw a spark plug at it, it wont shatter.
I’ve been cautioned to ensure that my window is fully closed because if it’s open even a few centimetres someone will squirt acid in my eyes and hijack me.

Sigh.
Sigh.
Sigh.

Peculiar Particulars

So busy today, can’t really write about anything substantial, so here are some useless facts:

If you keep a Goldfish in a dark room, it will eventually turn white.

A snail can sleep for 3 years.

China has more English speakers than the United States.

There are more chickens than people in the world.

The world's termites outweigh the world's humans 10 to 1!

Thomas Edison, was afraid of the dark! (Me too!)

A lump of pure gold the size of a matchbox can be flattened into a sheet the size of a tennis court!

Bruce Lee was so fast that they actually had to SLOW a film down so you could see his moves.

Clans of long ago that wanted to get rid of their unwanted people without killing them use to burn their houses down -- hence the statement "to get fired."

If you are locked in a completely sealed room, you will die of carbon dioxide poisoning before you will die of oxygen deprivation.

Btw, apples are more efficient than caffeine in keeping people awake in the mornings!

And smelling bananas and/or green apples (smelling, not eating) can help you lose weight!

By raising your legs slowly and laying on your back, you can't sink in quicksand.

The effects of technology on our lifestyles...

You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of three.

You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.

Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don't have the latest chat application.

You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries.

Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn't even have the first 10, 20 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.

You get up in the morning and go online before getting your breakfast.

Haha. I relate to all of the above.

happy valentines day ♥ ♥ ♥

Yes, the day of commercial love is here again and in its honour today’s post is devoted to lurrrrrrve. Sorry anti-Valentine cynics but my heart was made to love. Of course you all should know by now that I’m a firm believer that affection and appreciation should be shown everyday in every way and not isolated to February 14th. But, I really can’t be against a day dedicated to love. It just goes against my nature!

“Can there be anything more beautiful than young love?
Yes, there is a more beautiful thing. It is the spectacle of an old man and an old woman finishing their journey together on that path. Their hands are gnarled, but still clasped; their faces are seamed, but still radiant; their hearts are physically bowed and tired, but still strong with love and devotion for one another. Yes, there is a more beautiful thing than young love. Old love."

We’re all going get old and wrinkly and that’s why it’s important to remember that looks fade, beauty is only skin-deep but what’s inside is what counts and is what will stand the test of time.

“Beauty is the mine, Love is the diamond.”

In keeping with the theme of love. Here’s a story I came across:

“Six minutes to six, said the great round clock over the information booth in Grand Central Station. Lieutenant Blandford lifted his sunburned face, and his eyes narrowed to note the exact time. His heart was pounding with a beat that shocked him because he could not control it. In six minutes, he would see the woman who had filled such a special place in his life for the past 13 months, the woman he had never seen, yet whose written words had been with him and sustained him unfailingly. Now he was going to hear her real voice. Four minutes to six. His face grew sharp.

Under the immense, starred roof, people were walking fast, like threads of color being woven into a gray web. A girl passed close to him, and Lieutenant Blandford started. She was wearing a red flower in her suit lapel, but it was a crimson sweet pea, not the little red rose they had agreed upon. Besides, this girl was too young, about 18, whereas Hollis Meynell had frankly told him she was 30. "Well, what of it?" he had answered. "I'm 32." He was 29.

For 13 months, he had written, she had answered. When his letters did not arrive she wrote anyway, and now he believed he loved her, and she loved him.

But she had refused all his pleas to send him her photograph. That seemed rather bad, of course. But she had explained: "If your feeling for me has any reality, any honest basis, what I look like won't matter. Suppose I'm beautiful. I'd always be haunted by the feeling that you had been taking a chance on just that, and that kind of love would disgust me. Suppose I'm plain (and you must admit that this is more likely). Then I'd always fear that you were going on writing to me only because you were lonely and had no one else. No, don't ask for my picture. When you come to New York, you shall see me and then you shall make your decision. Remember, both of us are free to stop or to go on after that - whichever we choose..."

One minute to six - he pulled hard on a cigarette.

Then Lieutenant Blandford's heart leaped higher than his plane had ever done.

A young woman was coming toward him. Her figure was long and slim; her blond hair lay back in curls from her delicate ears. Her eyes were blue as flowers, her lips and chin had a gentle firmness. In her pale green suit, she was like springtime come alive.
He started toward her, entirely forgetting to notice that she was wearing no rose, and as he moved, a small, provocative smile curved her lips.

"Going my way, soldier?" she murmured.

Uncontrollably, he made one step closer to her. Then he saw Hollis Meynell.

She was standing almost directly behind the girl, a woman well past 40, her graying hair tucked under a worn hat. She was more than plump; her thick-ankled feet were thrust into low- heeled shoes. But she wore a red rose in the rumpled lapel of her brown coat.

The girl in the green suit was walking quickly away.

Blandford felt as though he were being split in two, so keen was his desire to follow the girl, yet so deep was his longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned and upheld his own; and there she stood. Her pale, plump face was gentle and sensible; he could see that now. Her gray eyes had a warm, kindly twinkle.

Lieutenant Blandford did not hesitate. His fingers gripped the small worn, blue leather book which was to identify him to her. This would not be love, but it would be something precious, something perhaps even rarer than love - a friendship for which he had been and must ever be grateful.

He squared his broad shoulders, saluted and held the book out toward the woman, although even while he spoke he felt shocked by the bitterness of his disappointment.

"I'm Lieutenant John Blandford, and you - you are miss Meynell. I'm so glad you could meet me. May...may I take you to dinner?"

The woman's face broadened in a tolerant smile. "I don't know what this is all about, son," she answered. "That young lady in the green suit - the one who just went by - begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said that if you asked me to go out with you, I should tell you that she's waiting for you in that big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of a test.”

Sweet right? You hardly find men like that anymore. They’re seriously not built the same way…

That’s my cue to sign off. Have a love-filled day! And remember if you have no one to love, love yourself!

collaboration...

U2 360°  Concert tonight. So just have to dedicate this post to it. My favorites all mashed up...

Uno, dos, tres, Catorce!
I'm at a place called Vertigo
It's everything I wish I didn't know
But you give me something I can feel,
Eclipse
You elevate my soul
I've got no self control
Maybe you can educate my mind
Love
Lift me up from out of these blues
Won't you tell me something true
I believe in you
I lie in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high
Elevation
All of this, all of this can be yours
Just give me what I want and no one gets hurt...

Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it's
Too late
Tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We're one, but we're not the same
We get to carry each other
Did I ask too much?
More than a lot.
You gave me nothing,
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
See we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love is a higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't keep holding on
To what you got
When all you've got is hurt
Is it getting better?
Or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you now?
You got someone to blame
You say
One love
One life
When it's one need
In the night
One love
We get to share it
Leaves you baby if you
Don't care for it
One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should
And you give yourself away
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you.

I have climbed highest mountains
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you
I have run
I have crawled
I have scaled these city walls
Only to be with you
I have kissed honey lips
Felt the healing in your fingertips
It burned like a fire
This burning desire
I have spoke with the tongue of angels
I have held the hand of a devil
It was warm in the night
I was cold as a stone
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
I'll go crazy if I don't go crazy tonight
There's a part of me in the chaos that's quiet
Every beauty needs to go out with an idiot
How can you stand next to the truth and not see it?
A change of heart comes slow..
It's not a hill it's a mountain
As you start out the climb
Gonna make it all the way to the light
Is it true the perfect love drives out all fear?
The right to appear ridiculous is something I hold dear

Cuz I’ve been taught:
Love is not the easy thing
The only baggage that you can bring...
Is all that you can't leave behind
And I know it aches
And your heart it breaks
And you can only take so much
Walk on, walk on
Leave it behind
You got to leave it behind
All that you fashion
All that you make
All that you build
All that you break
All that you measure
All that you feel
All this you can leave behind
All that you reason
All that you sense
All that you speak
All you dress-up
All that you scheme...

exploding colas and immorality

There was an incident with a frozen coke can at home this weekend. It got me thinking about one of the fondest memories I have. It’s one that I share with my elder brother. Quite unusual because he doesn’t live with us so we have limited time together. Anyway, it happened a while ago. We were thirsty and put one of those 1,25Lt glass Coke bottles in the freezer to get cold, promising each other that we wont forget it’s in there. and of course, we did forget. When I remembered hours later (at 3 a.m. in my sleep), I shot up in bed  and rushed to take it out. Meanwhile, my brother, who was up watching tele, heard “strange” noises so came to investigate- with a baseball bat! Don't worry, he realized it was just me (to both our relief). We quickly placed the bulging bottle in the kitchen sink and watched it bubbling from afar. I recall how much we laughed at the fact that we were terrified of opening the bottle; afraid it would explode in our faces. Eventually when we did open it, we drank the slush and toasted our success (and bad memories).
It was one of those silly, funny moments I’ll always cherish. Life is all about those simple things.

Another oldie playing on TV: “Shining Through.” Set in World War 2, it’s centered around the Holocaust, but for the most part, it’s a love story. It’s an OK movie, I wouldn’t really recommend it to anyone but it does contain one of my favorite dialogues. It goes more or less like this:

“-When did you start smoking?

I don't know.

-That was a silly thing to do, don't you think?

I'm a silly girl. I think you're living proof of that. This is all so civilized. That's what you like, isn't it? Civilized people, polite ladies who look good at the opera, and never make you laugh too hard, and never make you feel too much.

-Did I promise you something? If I did, I'd like to know.

What do you want from me?

-I want you to stop feeling sorry for yourself.

No, you want me to stop feeling. Like you... You did love me, didn't you? I couldn't have been wrong.

-You weren't.

Well then how do you stop, or want to?"

Sigh. I’m such a sucker for all this stuff. Well I’m off now. Have to get ready for a night out. By the way, saw the most disgusting thing. Someone with NO disabilities, parked smack in the middle of TWO handicap parking spots at the mall. Some people have no morals.

the truth about cats and dogs...

I think I was about 9 years old when this film came out. Not very age appropriate but I’ve loved it since then. I always have an affinity towards movies where I can relate to one or more of the characters. For the most part I relate to Abbey. I was never the “pretty girl” and I’d like to think that I’m intelligent. Don’t know if everyone agrees with that.
In any case I’ve always presumed that where I lack in looks I make up in personality. In the recent years I’m told that I “blossomed” and now apparently people can’t see pass that to appreciate the person I am inside. Whatever. I disagree. I’m just an average girl and I want to be accepted for who I am, not what I look like. Beauty is only skin-deep. People who are fixated on appearances are one-dimensional and small-minded. So it seems whether you’re “pretty and dumb” or “clever and ugly” you’re subjected to the same hogwash and superficiality.

I myself am not too concerned with appearances because I’ve had many encounters with people whom at first I was not attracted to but in the end they charmed their way into my heart. It’s all about how they make you feel. If he’s gorgeous but an uneducated buffoon all you’ll get is loads of other girls chasing after your man, escalating his ego into colossal proportions. And what man will bother with you if he has a million other cows on his trail? I don’t condone “competition”. The man has to be mine and only mine. So he needs to have his head screwed on right and his priorities in order.

On that note, I should actually get back to work. Here are my favourite quotes from the movie.

You know how someone's appearance can change the longer you know them? How a really attractive person, if you don't like them, can become more and more ugly; whereas someone you might not have even have noticed... that you wouldn't look at more than once, if you love them, can become the most beautiful thing you've ever seen. All you want to do is be near them.”

“So say you meet one of these no sparks women, and you really take the time to get to know her and then you become intellectually stimulated by her. You just really enjoy her personality, thereby igniting all your lust and passion. Have you ever thought about that?”

“Take him. I don't want a fight. I refuse to degenerate into some misogynistic cliché.”

“If I was a guy, I think women would like, line up to go out with me. I'm smart. I have a good sense of humor. I make a great living.”

“Are you ok?
-Nothing that a rooftop and an AK-47 won't take care of.”

“Beauty and Brains make the perfect woman.
-No it makes the perfect political prisoner. What we really do well is act self-righteous and starve.”

“Disappointment doesn't kill.... rejection kills. Disappointment only maims.”

If you were trapped in Biosphere 2 for three years, who would you bring: Time Magazine's Woman of the Year or Playboy's Playmate of the Year?”

“I only ever loved one woman and I don't want to lose her twice.”

As I've Matured...

(Nice email I received...)

I've learned that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is stalk them and hope they panic and give in.  (Lol)

I've learned that no matter how much I care, some people are just jackasses.

I've learned that it takes years to build up trust, and it only takes suspicion, not proof, to destroy it.

I've learned that whatever hits the fan will not be evenly distributed.

I've learned that you shouldn't compare yourself to others - they are more screwed up than you think.

I've learned that depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.

I've learned to not sweat the petty things, and not pet the sweaty things.

I've learned age is a very high price to pay for maturity.

I've learned that I don't suffer from insanity- I enjoy it.

I've learned that we are responsible for what we do, unless we are celebrities.

I've learned that artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

I've learned that there is a fine line between genius and insanity.

I've learned that the people you care most about in life are taken from you too soon and all the less import
ant ones just never go away. And the real pains in the ass are permanent.
I have learned that being kind is more important than being right.
I have learned that when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
I have learned that a smile is an inexpensive gift.
I have learned that I can always pray for someone when there is no other way of helping them.
Life’s all about learning. Knowledge from the cradle to the grave.

The Four Principles of Spirituality

“Whomsoever you encounter is the right one”
This means that no one comes into our life by chance. Everyone who is around us, anyone with whom we interact, represents something, whether to teach us something or to help us improve a current situation.

“Whatever happened is the only thing that could have happened”
Nothing, absolutely nothing of that which we experienced could have been any other way. Not even in the least important detail. There is no “If only I had done that differently… then it would have been different…” No. What happened is the only thing that could have taken place and must have taken place for us to learn our lesson in order to move forward. Every single situation in life, which we encounter, is absolutely perfect, even when it defies our understanding and our ego.

“Each moment in which something begins is the right moment”
Everything begins at exactly the right moment, neither earlier nor later. When we are ready for it, for that something new in our life, it is there, ready to begin.

“What is over, is over”
It is that simple. When something in our life ends, it helps our evolution. That is why, enriched by the recent experience, it is better to let go and move on.

Be good to yourself.
Love with your whole being.
Always be happy.

"it'll all get better in time" ~Leona Lewis

It's been the longest winter without you
I didn't know where to turn to
See somehow I can't forget you
After all that we've been through

Going coming thought I heard a knock
Who's there? No one.
Thinking that I deserve it
Now I realize that I really didn't know
If you didn't notice you mean everything
Quickly I'm learning to love again
All I know is I'm gonna be okay

I couldn't turn on the TV
Without something there to remind me
Was it all that easy
To just put aside your feelings

If I'm dreaming don't wanna laugh
Hurt my feelings but that's the path
I believe in
And I know that time will heal it

Since there's no more you and me
It's time I let you go
So I can be free
And live my life how it should be
No matter how hard it is I'll be fine without you
Yes I will

Thought I couldn't live without you
It's gonna hurt when it heals too
It'll all get better in time
And even though I really love you
I'm gonna smile cause I deserve to
It'll all get better in time

All truth is simple... is that not a lie? ~Friedrich Nietzsche

I started watching this movie on Sunday called "The Invention of Lies". They depict truthfulness in a very negative light; showing that if people were always blatantly honest, it would result in a dull, depressing world. I'm not yet sure how it ends but I already don't like it. They’re completely off base. There's a huge difference between "not lying" and blurting out what one feels in an autistic manner.
Take this exchange for example:

“MARK:
Hi Shelley. I'm still attracted to you today.

SHELLEY:
Hi Mark. Everyday I realize more and more how over-qualified I am for this position and how incompetent you are at yours.”

I mean how does that in anyway truly reflect the virtue of honesty? Everyone coldly delivers, whether asked or not - exactly what is on their mind. That’s not what honesty is. You don’t have to hurt others with your candidness. Not in the unnecessary way shown in the film. If that were how it was then obviously everyone would prefer lying to the truth. It’s what the Devil would want you to believe. That’s all I’m saying!

I still have to get through the rest of it but I doubt it will get any better. Apparently the concept of “no lying” also means that no religion exists. Religion is not a lie! That’s a despicable thought!!!

“Religion is to do right. It is to love, it is to serve, it is to think, it is to be humble.”

I know you might be thinking “it’s just a movie” but gosh, movies influence people. And this one’s doing it in all the wrong ways!!!

Nevertheless I don’t know if it’s related in any way but I had one of those disturbing but insightful dreams last night. All about truth. Facing it and how people handle it. Fact vs. What we want to believe. Reality vs. Idealism. And the sting it can leave behind.

So in my dream, there were these people searching for answers and when they got them, they were worse off than before. They were devastated. They would have been better of not knowing. That gave me some perception on a situation I’m in. I think sometimes ignorance IS bliss. Why burden others when they’d be happier without the weight of your problems on their shoulders? I know a problem shared is a problem halved but what if it’s doubled instead? Sometimes a predicament needs to be forgotten, not discussed or remembered every time you see their looks of sympathy or hear their words of pity. So I guess it’s always honesty before lies and when necessary omission before honesty.

I know no matter what the situation is, it’s never worth lying. But omitting truths to protect myself, to protect others and to preserve privacy? Surely it can’t be a bad thing?
Is that deceptive? Does that put me in the ranks of a liar?

I’d like to hear your opinion.

Let death come to me (for life is a folly)

A poem by Alex Fischer

No longer do I find happiness in the day
Everyday becomes worse and worse leading up to that wretched St. Valentines Day
I hate so I damn it all
Wishing that would all just fall, fall, fall
Fall away, away from my soul
Away from the hate that I create
From the life that I have I say 'Damn it all'

For every time I fall in love
Destroyed man I always become
So this is what is say so listen closely
For I won't repeat this because it reminds me of how lonely
I am only

So damn the stars and damn the moon
Damn all the things that make women swoon
Damn emotions and feelings
Those petty feelings
Damn human life and its existence
The wonderful sought out by human eyes
The ones I damn, I cannot deny
Damn the Earth and Damn the Seas
Damn all things that have breath so please
Do not try to advert my mind from the leaving of this horrible life
Those thoughts that seem so great
An escape at last
An escape that seems to have no gaps

And now as I see this accursed life I lead
I beg of you please do not follow me
For now it is my wish to be left alone
Alone to wait for the rock and the stone
Speech is no longer a key
Nor is my heart it is lost to me

one love, one heart, one destiny

"Only once in your life, I truly believe, you find someone who can completely turn your world around. You tell them things that you’ve never shared with another soul and they absorb everything you say and actually want to hear more. You share hopes for the future, dreams that will never come true, goals that were never achieved and the many disappointments life has thrown at you. When something wonderful happens, you can’t wait to tell them about it, knowing they will share in your excitement. They are not embarrassed to cry with you when you are hurting or laugh with you when you make a fool of yourself. Never do they hurt your feelings or make you feel like you are not good enough, but rather they build you up and show you the things about yourself that make you special and even beautiful. There is never any pressure, jealousy or competition but only a quiet calmness when they are around. You can be yourself and not worry about what they will think of you because they love you for who you are. The things that seem insignificant to most people such as a note, song or walk become invaluable treasures kept safe in your heart to cherish forever. Memories of your childhood come back and are so clear and vivid it’s like being young again. Colours seem brighter and more brilliant. Laughter seems part of daily life where before it was infrequent or didn’t exist at all. A phone call or two during the day helps to get you through a long day’s work and always brings a smile to your face. In their presence, there’s no need for continuous conversation, but you find you’re quite content in just having them nearby. Things that never interested you before become fascinating because you know they are important to this person who is so special to you. You think of this person on every occasion and in everything you do. Simple things bring them to mind like a pale blue sky, gentle wind or even a storm cloud on the horizon. You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible. You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that’s so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate who will remain loyal to the end. Life seems completely different, exciting and worthwhile. Your only hope and security is in knowing that they are a part of your life."
— Bob Marley

If you're gonna be a bear, be a grizzly.

“Her name was Marie-Therese Walter. She was 17 when Picasso fell in love with her. Picasso was already married, and 30 years her senior, so they kept their affair a secret. But he documented his passion by hiding her initials in some of his paintings. Of course, Picasso wasn’t completely ready to settle down, and he left Marie-Therese for Dora Maar, just like he left his wife Olga for Marie-Therese. But Marie-Therese never stopped loving Picasso. And she hung herself after his death. She just loved him so much. And in the end he didn’t really love her back. It's just sad.”

Watched the cheesiest most cliché movie ever: “When in Rome”
The weird part is, I could totally relate to Beth.

“Every time I’ve ever put myself out there I’ve gotten hurt, every time. Its like I meet a guy and I think its great, and anyone else would just be thinking about how much greater its gonna get, and I’m just constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop.”

So is that what my life is? Cheesy and Cliché? Umm, more like a series of mishaps and misfortunes. Seriously, the premise of my existence seems to be: whatever can go wrong WILL go wrong. So then wouldn’t it be logical to always be pessimistic/ expect the worst so that I’m always prepared for the inevitable outcome?

“You could get your heart broken or... you could have the greatest love affair the world has ever known. But you're never gonna know unless you try.”

I guess the best thing to do is live with no expectations that way you’re pleasantly surprised when things go well and not disappointed when they don’t.

P.S. Especially loved Jon Heder in this movie! *flips hair*

befuddlement...

My mind’s a whirlwind of sentiment and confusion. Just when I decide to go down one path, someone comes along and pushes me onto another. I’m at a point where I don’t know if I’m happy or sad, strong or weak, fighting or giving up. And the irony of it all is whilst I’ve been literally forced onto this emotional roller coaster for the past week, he’s carrying on with his life, oblivious and indifferent to everything. I probably come across a tad bit idiotic to still be fixated with this. So why, you might ask, am I putting myself through all this misery? The truth is, I don’t know anymore. Maybe there is some fact in this article a friend just sent me:

"Eckhart Tolle believes we create and maintain problems because they give us a sense of identity. Perhaps this explains why we often hold onto our pain far beyond its ability to serve us.

We replay past mistakes over and over again in our head, allowing feelings of shame and regret to shape our actions in the present. We hold stress in our minds and bodies, potentially creating serious health issues, and accept that state of tension as the norm.

Though it may sound simple, Ajahn Chah’s advice speaks volumes: “If you let go a little, you will have a little peace. If you let go a lot, you will have a lot of peace.”

There will never be a time when life is simple. There will always be time to practice accepting that. Every moment is a chance to let go and feel peaceful."

It goes on to describe 40 ways to “Let Go and Feel Less Pain” by letting go of frustration with yourself/your life, anger and bitterness, past relationships and stress. I have tried some stuff on the list and it has helped. But, that doesn’t change the fact that when I’m not distracted by the zillion other things happening in my life, I’m still hurting underneath. And when all the pain comes flooding back, nothing else seems worth the effort.

Perhaps I should’ve stuck to my method and process of moving on, instead of letting other people sidetrack me. I have no one but myself to blame. I let myself float away on false hope. To those who continue to plant my feet firmly to the ground, thank you. But I’m afraid you’re going to have to deal with me just a little bit longer.

Thank you all for the patience and love.

desist in order to persist

In case anyone was wondering, Friday night was as awkward as I thought it'd be. Not forgetting that my mind had already been subjected to more than enough torture the previous 6 days. Being around all his family was just plain uncomfortable. Wouldn't wish the experience on anyone! Didn't feel anything on seeing him and his fiance though.

"Never get mad when you see your ex with someone new. Your parents always taught you to give your old toys to the less fortunate."

It's quite clear that their lifestyle is not suited for me. So no nostalgia/affliction on my part. Plus my heart belongs to another. Everything else seems pretty meaningless now.

Have started the ominous task of job hunting. Need to get my game on before someone elderly decides to get me married off! Apparently that's the only viable excuse for quitting.: Marriage. Have you heard anything more absurd? How do people still stand by the oppressionistic views of yester-century?!
I was forced into the situation and I will not let them continue to hold my head under water. They think I'm too idealistic for my own good. But I will prove otherwise.

Today's advice: People! Please don't marry someone just to get out of a job you detest! On the same note, please don't marry someone for a greencard/citizenship (don't want to get into it).

the current track of my tears

People say I'm the life of the party
'Cause I make a joke or two
Although I might be laughing loud and hearty
Deep inside I am blue

So take a good look at my face
You'll see my smile looks out of place
If you look closer it's easy to trace the tracks of my tears
I need you, need you

Since you left me if you see me with somebody else
Seeming like I'm having fun
Although they might be cute there's just no substitute
'Cause you're the only permanent one

Outside I'm masquerading
Inside my hope is fading
Just a clown since you put me down
My smile is my make-up I wear since my break-up with you

lovefool

Guess mine is not the first heart broken
My eyes are not the first to cry
I'm not the first to know
There's just no getting over you

You know I'm just a fool who's willing
To sit around and wait for you
But, baby, can't you see
There's nothing else for me to do?
I'm hopelessly devoted to you

My head is saying, "Fool, forget him."
My heart is saying, "Don't let go.
Hold on till the end."
And that's what I intend to do
I'm hopelessly devoted to you

But now there's nowhere to hide
Since you pushed my love aside
I'm out of my head
Hopelessly devoted to you

the cards we are dealt...

They say it’s a broken heart, but I hurt in my entire body. I only just began to enjoy it before it was all taken away.

When you jump for joy, beware that no one moves the ground from beneath your feet. ~Stanislaw Lec

I guess it’s a good thing it was so short lived. If he was stupid enough to walk away, I must be smart enough to let go.

If you don't like something change it; if you can't change it, change the way you think about it.  ~Mary Engelbreit

When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.  ~Victor Frankl

All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.  ~Anatole France

Without accepting the fact that everything changes, we cannot find perfect composure.  But unfortunately, although it is true, it is difficult for us to accept it.  Because we cannot accept the truth of transience, we suffer.  ~Shunryu Suzuki

We would rather be ruined than changed;
We would rather die in our dread
Than climb the cross of the moment
And let our illusions die.

~W.H. Auden

God grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the courage to change the one I can, and the wisdom to know it's me.

There is a certain relief in change, even though it be from bad to worse!  As I have often found in travelling in a stagecoach, that it is often a comfort to shift one's position, and be bruised in a new place.  ~Washington Irving

The birds are molting.  If only man could molt also - his mind once a year its errors, his heart once a year its useless passions.  ~James Allen

Every possession and every happiness is but lent by chance for an uncertain time, and may therefore be demanded back the next hour.  ~Arthur Schopenhauer

I guess that sums it all up. I mean I was sad for a few minutes yesterday but quickly moved past it. Bikram class was amazing. Friends are as well. And I woke up to a nice, smile inducing email this morning. Here’s to many more of those.

First day of the month so stress levels are high. I haven’t yet had a chance to read “He’s Just Not That Into You” but I will soon, I promise. Think we can all learn a lil summin’ summin’ from it.
I know my blogs seem to be more targeted at the ladies, but men, you too can take heed of the advice. Apparently blokes are not the only heartbreakers out there. I’ve been told girls are callous as well (although I don’t know any who are).

May we all be blessed with the best and safeguarded against the rest.
