"To Be Fat Like Me” is a movie about a girl
who believes that overweight people, like her mom and brother, seem to make
excuses about how the world perceives them. She decides to go undercover as a
fat girl to prove that weight has nothing to do with popularity and that the
fat person's negative attitude is to blame instead. She learns that being fat
is not easy and is mocked and teased by the other kids.
She starts off believing that “Fat people
use their weight as an excuse” and ends up realising that being fat “is like
permission for people to treat you like crap.”
The issue of obesity is a very real
problem. However, the problems are not just health-wise, but also a
sociological and psychological problem. Just because people look different from
you that does not give you the right to judge them by what’s on the outside.
The movie has good intentions but what is
up with the ending??? She asks her boyfriend if he would stay with her if she
were really to balloon up and he says no. While that may be honest, it's sad...
Maybe if they were strangers he would not be attracted to her, but the whole
point is that her size would change, not her personality. But he says he likes
that she’s skinny and a jock. And she’s happy with his answer and kisses him!
Wtf? Seriously?
Favourite quote from the film:
“Fat or skinny, popular or freak, it all
comes down to this—the world will tell you who you are until you tell the
world.”
I’m sick of people judging others by their
appearance! Just because someone is overweight that doesn’t mean they’re a
lesser person or that they are bad people for allowing themselves to be that
size. It doesn’t mean they should be treated differently or that they don’t
deserve/won’t get what a thin person would. They could be the most wonderful,
sweetest people inside but they’re not even given a chance. It’s narrow minded,
ignorant people who continuously pester fat people into believing that they’re
worth less than the non-fat people around them.
And while I am already venting I will just
add that Indian people do that a lot! Especially in my family. Makes me sick to
my stomach. Superficial freaks! They don’t realise how their words affect a
person and what it does to them mentally.
They claim they are just worried about the
risks of obesity but that’s bullshit. All their “advice” just makes no problem
into a big dilemma. It’s an issue because you made it one. All I have to say to
those critical scumbags is that “People can lose the weight. But you’ll
probably never stop being shallow.”
